Orthodontics Q & A

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that involves correction of teeth and jaws which are positioned improperly. Not only can crooked teeth make you feel like they detract from your appearance, but they’re often harder to clean, making them more susceptible to tooth decay and periodontal disease; all of this can lead to other health problems.

Orthodontic treatment leads to a healthier mouth, a more pleasing appearance, and teeth that are more likely to last a lifetime.

When is orthodontic care usually recommended?

Some common conditions that lead to orthodontic treatment include:

  • Overbite, sometimes called "buck teeth:" where the upper front teeth stick out over the lower teeth, and the jaw looks as though it is too far behind the upper teeth
  • Underbite: your lower teeth are too far forward, or your upper teeth are too far back often resembling a "bulldog" appearance
  • Crossbite: when one or more of your upper teeth don’t don’t meet the lower teeth squarely when biting together normally
  • Open bite: when your back teeth bite together, there’s space between your front or side teeth
  • Misplaced midline: when the center of your upper front teeth does not line up with the center of your lower front teeth
  • Spacing: gaps, or spaces, between your teeth as a result of missing teeth or teeth that don’t quite "fill up" your mouth
  • Crowding: when there are too many teeth for your dental ridge to accommodate

How does orthodontic treatment work?

All Family Shoreline Dental utilizes many different types of appliances to help move your teeth, retrain muscles and sometimes affect the growth of your jaw.

Whether the devices are fixed in your mouth or are removable, they place gentle pressure on your teeth and jaw. Some examples of fixed appliances include braces and fixed space maintainers; examples of removable appliances are retainers, aligners, palatal expanders, headgear and much more.

Depending on the severity of your case, Joey Cazares, DDS and Associates will choose which treatment approach will be the most effective for you. Call today or schedule an appointment online to see if orthodontic treatment can improve your smile.
